To play BFBC2 online, you need to actually buy a copy - to get online you need to have an online account. EA gives you a code which you use to activate the online account when you buy the game, but you can buy brand new copies off ebay now for $20 USD.

I wouldn't consider playing/buying BFBC2 anymore, it appears no-one play much anymore. a total of 30 servers. everyone's rushing for BF3 - i recommend you buy that instead. BFBC2 just feels old and used.
